Winter 2012-2013

Winter fishing is in full swing in the Kiawah area. The docks are holding schools of sheepshead in good numbers. The sizes vary from area to area and somedays the smaller fish seem to be all we can catch while others, the bigger fish are caught. The offshore reefs are loaded with black sea bass and the spiney dogfish sharks have arrived. Light tackle fishing at the reefs has been non stop reeling in fish which is great for kids. We are also catching some really big redfish and black drum on some trips on the reefs as well.

Fall Fishing 2012

The fall bite is in full swing. The water temps are starting to cool and we are catching some really nice fish lately. There are still some sharks but they will be departing soon, The large redfish have been on the reefs as well as weakfish, black sea bass, black drum and flounder. Inshore, the trout and sheepshead bite has been pretty good. The bite will get better as the waters continue to cool. The creeks are holding lots of shrimp and mullet, so catching bait has been pretty easy to do.

Summer 2012 – Kiawah

Fishing has been good all summer. The trout populations seemed to have returned this year. We had a mild winter after suffering from several very cold winter months in years past and killed off a lot of our trout. We have caught more trout this summer than all of last year and the fall fishing should even be better. Sheepshead are biting again in the late summer and like the trout, the fall is the best time to catch them. Shark fishing will be winding down soon but we have had many good trips with multiple catches of good sized sharks this summer. Redfishing has been decent but the sizes have been small where we are catching them. There are plenty of shrimp and mullet in the creeks so catching bait has not been a problem either.

The reefs off our coast have been very productive all summer. One of the reefs we fish is full of black sea bass. Drop down a line and catch one on whatever bait you choose. Other reefs seem to have a more varied catch such as flounder, redfish, black drum, sheepshead, spadefish, weakfish, bluefish and ladyfish. With cooler water temps coming in the fall the fishing will be even better.

Spring Fishing 2012

Thanks to a mild winter, the spring fishing has been great. The inshore sharks are here early and are being caught on live shrimp, crab or cut baits. The trout fishing has been better this year already due to the mild winter water temps. Redfish are being caught using a varity of baits and the shrimp are almost big enough to catch in the cast net. Sheepshead are being caught around docks using fiddler crabs. The nearshore reef trips have been real productive with many species being caught. Black Sea Bass and weakfish are the most common but we are landing many large redfish, black drum , sheepshead and should be seeing spadefish at any time now. Gulp shrimp patterns have been out fishing live shrimp on most trips, while the sheepshead are being caught on fiddlers.
