Early Winter Inshore
Posted by: | CommentsWe have been seeing lots of fish on the docks as the waters clear from the colder temperatures. They have been picky on eating though. Fiddler crabs are usually the bait of choice for sheepshead. Some docks, they eat the fiddlers. Other docks, live shrimp worked and in some areas, fresh oysters were all they would eat. We have caught fish on every trip so far but some trips have been much more productive. The bait stealers have moved out from the creeks now so at least when you get a bite, its a good fish. Thankfully, this year, the water temps have not dropped so low as to completely turn off the bite like last year.
Winter Reef Fishing
Posted by: | CommentsWe have made several trips out to the reef this winter with good results each time. There are some big redfish, lots of black sea bass, sheepshead, weakfish, and other bottom dwellers. The spiney dogfish sharks are already starting to show as well. We have been using fiddlers, shrimp, minnows and gulp baits for fishing. The sheepshead bite has been really good and the bsb are always around. We are picking the days that the winds are not blowing to make for a fun, safe trip. Just remember to wear layers to keep warm on these colder days.

This is a great time for reef fishing. In 3 hours Saturday, we landed over 80 fish. The biggest was a 35 pound red. It was non-stop action. You have to time it for the right tide, but if you do, it is a blast.
